In many business situations when there is a problem, the person doing the rejecting always says, “It’s not personal, it’s just business.” However, often it really is personal. as they are breaking up. In many cases a person may have their product or service rejected. The reality is that the majority of the time is is personal. People tend to lie so much that the truth would just help the person figure out what went wrong and how to correct it with the next client or relationship. I saw a video on Facebook about a business situation where the manger made that statement. Then later he gossiped with another manger stating that it truly was personal. Their reasons varied such as they didn’t like the person, the clothing, appearance, ethnicity and even vocabulary. The truth is brutal sometimes but often better to handle than lies. The funny thing is that when a person is told “It’s not personal” in any other situation they know in reality it is. Even when people are breaking up with another person they may say that phrase rather than say that it is not working out, they don’t care for the person anymore, etc. By using that phrase they are using the excuse that the relationship is interfering with their job, or their business. Either way it’s not very nice. I have even seen people use that phrase to others in a variety of situations and felt it was completely inappropriate. I would have loved to have said something but it was none of my business. A better approach without hurting a person’s feelings is to get as close to the truth as possible. It makes it easier to remember in the future, don’t you agree?
