Start Over

What is now referred to as the “gray divorce” has boiled down to people who have to start over later in life.  Many couples have reached an impass. Their children are grown, moved out and after years of limited communication and conversation, people are calling it quits. They had long ago started living separate lives. Now, once they divorce they have to start over. The trouble is that with inflation, the high costs of housig, to begin again later in life is difficult.  In addtion, there are fewer jobs for older people.  The other thing that is hurting them is the high costs of medical care. I saw an article stating that the original monies families thought their children would inherit is now going to cover medical bills. There are probably a few times in anyone’s life that they had to start over. Many people during the depression certainly did. I read a book to my children when they were young while they ate breakfast each day before school.  It was entitled “The Blue Willow.” It was about a girl and her family who had to move out west as they had lost everything in the depression. They had very little and lived in a shack. Obviously, everything turned around for them but it was a good lesson just to let even children know that nothing is perfect or lasts forever. Over the years I have known people who were forced to file bankruptcy and start again. It was not easy and whenever possible my late husband and I give whatever assistance we could. Eventually their lives improved. One of the features about contract engineering that I loved was helping people who were out of work become employed. Often they had lost their jobs, homes and some were even living in their cars. This changed everything for them. Have you ever had to start over?
