Volunteer

When I was young I worked in a hospital as a dietary aide and a few people I knew worked as candy stripers. It is a term no longer used. Now they are simply called a volunteer. Mostly they were girls who wanted to have the hospital experience to decide if they were interested in a nursing career. Often we ate in the cafeteria and I came to know many of them quite well.  Very few decided against nursing which was interesting. The cook at the hospital was actually excellent. They also had a pastry chef from Italy who really wanted me to marry one of her sons. Over the years I did volunteer primarily at my children’s school events. When we were living in New England my son’s class had a field trip to a maple sugaring farm near by. It was also extremely cold at that time. While all the kids had a great time and enjoyed it, it took me hours just to warm up my legs that remained cold to the touch. My late husband, from time to time would volunteer at  a soup kitchen. Another time I was a volunteer for a camp with my daughter in the spring. It was sunny but exceptionally cold. The food was poorly made. When I found a way to take a shower there was no heat and very little hot water. The teacher let us leave early as we were headed to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the spring break. I was extremely grateful.  When we lived in San Diego I went on a field trip with my son’s class to Sea World. It was great. I bought all the kids I was in charge of a treat and while I was paying a seagull swooped down and stole my son’s so I had to buy one again. Many people volunteer to bring kindness anywhere needed. Volunteering is not just about going to a facility. There are individuals, particuarly in my family, who rescuse dogs. There are other individuals I know who bring food and baked goods to people who live alone. Being thoughtful and kind is truly needed in the world don’t you agree?
