I just discovered that it recently was special needs and autism awareness week. Many people don’t fully understand special needs individuals. For example, in Ireland, young adults with downs syndrome work at jobs every day. I used to see them walk home from work with a family member. The Irish believe in giving everyone a fair chance. When I was young, the special needs individuals were simply institualized. I visited a facily in America and found ways to donate clothing and help. I was flabbergasted at their treatment. As they had no assistance or taining, they were treated poorly and simply wandered around. I almost fainted when a worker felt they might have been out of control and simpled hosed them. Fortunately, times have changed. None of us are prefect. We all need to try to do our best and help others. Giving adults with special needs a chance to work and feel useful and important is a good first step. It is just simply thinking about others and doing the right thing. When my daughter was in the first grade I held a classroom party for her birthday. All the children were invited including a downs syndrome girl. Her mother was thrilled. My daughter played with her from time to time and she even came to our home and played with her and her brother. At that time I worked at home, which is exactly what I still do today. I had a nanny or sitter come Monday through Friday to do activities with them and when they started school she would work in the office which we had built above the garage or she would be sent on work related errands. It worked out quite well. I saw a man on the TV the other day explaining to people that we all need to treat each other decently regardless of ethnicity. He was one hundred percent right. He said it was easy to play various individuals who were different against each other when it is often our fault for our own actions. What do you think?
