Self Esteem

Self esteem is important for everyone at all ages. It started when we were young. When our parents said, “Good job, or very good, or you are so smart,” etc. it help set the tone. It is important to always believe in ourselves. Yet often it is very difficult. That also starts in elementary school. There are children who have inflated self esteem and believe they are just better than everyone else in every way possible. They may come from a wealthy home and therefore, feel that they are entitled and should be treated accordingly. The trouble is that in elementary school many of the kids just want to interact with each other and play. They are not that interested in anything else. I once read a story about a really wealthy boy who became friends with a very poor boy. They played together every day and one day the rich boy invited the poor boy to his home. Of course, the poor boy was amazed. However, his parents treated him quite well and when it was time to take the boy home the dad was quite surprised at the poor boy’s home. He didn’t mock or criticize him. Of course, the poor boy wanted the rich boy to go to his house on another day. The dad was hesitant but did agree. When that day arrived the rich boy had a great time with his friend and his siblings. His mother made a small but nice meal. When it was time to go home, the dad came to collect his son. The boy was so thrilled with his friend that he didn’t noticed that he had much less than him because he just didn’t care. What mattered was that he had a wonderful time. That is when the parents realized they were on the right track with their son. The children that grow into adults with an inflated self esteem are the most difficult people to deal with. They always believe they are right, and only their way is the right way. They don’t seem to listen which is important in any relationship. Many people fail in life because of poor self esteem. There are now all types of videos, programs, and therapy to help people turn their lives around and feel good about themselves. Do you know anyone who has either a low self esteem or an inflated one?
