Many years ago people frequently shopped at stores that gave free trading stamps. They could be used to purchase all types of items for free. Almost every business passed them out including groceries, petrol stations, drug stores, and many small variety shops. Everyone loved them. I have a very old suitcase from trading stamps. There were all types including green stamps which were probably the most popular. There were also plaid stamps. Over time they simply faded away. Whenever you received them and used them it made you feel as you were receiving something for free. In the “Brady Bunch” Alice, the housekeeper had a massive amount of the plaid stamps. Each separate family, now united, had their own as well. When they combined all three they had over ninety-two books. Then came the fighting and arguing as to how to use the stamps. The boys wanted a row boat and the girls a sewing machine. Each side thought the other’s choice was terrible. The parents tried to make them band together and make a choice but they couldn’t agree. Finally, by way of a suggestion from Alice they had a contest. It was building a card house. The boys stated categorically that if there was any type of accident or misstep occurred, the side that did not cause the crashing of the card house won. Of course, the boys lost and the mom and girls headed to the redemption store. Once there they could not agree on which sewing machine. It was the end of the day and shopkeeper was tired. Finally, the scene cuts to the home. The boys are sitting on the couch with their dad when the girls and Carol rolled in a large box. They boys wanted to leave but the dad said they could not be sore losers. When the girls lifted off the cardboard there was a nice color TV. Everyone was thrilled.
