An Apple a Day

The old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is still applicable today.  Now there are so many varieties you literally have real choices not the old Macintosh, Granny Smith or Delicious.  I recently bought organic Pink Ladies.  They tasted fabulous and were great in my apple muffins.  There are many reasons why apples are important in our diet.  Besides being a low calaorie snack, they simply taste really good.  They also contain antioxidents such as quercetin. So many of our foods are processed that it is not an easy task to be able to include antiocidents in our daily diet.  When my children were young we lived bewteen two apple orchards. Many of the children who grew up with my daughter as she lived there longer than my son, developed health issues.  Not because of the apples but rather the insane amount of peciticides. At that time we didn’t really have much data on that topic. They did have great events and one of the orchards made the ‘Very Fine’ apple juice. Obviously an apple a day will definitely help your digestive tract.  Plus the water inside the apple is good for you as well. Apples will help with blood sugar stabilization. Many indviduals now have Type II diabetes and try to avoid sugar.  The problem is that the high saturated fats can not only make their blood sugar rise but give them high cholosterol. I would think that eating an apple a day would be far better than medications. In my home we always have a bowl of fresh apples.  They are great as an after school snack, a low calorie treat before bed and if you are in a rush a quick breakfast. How do you feel about an apple a day? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
