Organic

For years my family thought I was foolish to buy organic foods because they were and are over priced. Well, guess what, today a study was released to farmers about the toxins and poinsons that are in the fertilizers they use. It is called biosolids and it is used not only as fertilizer but also as a waste treatment. The importance of organic cannot be underestimated. There is the dirty dozen  fruits such as blueberries, strawberries, apples, etc. When my children were young we lived in a rural town that had two apple fields between us. We didn’t know at the time as we always bought their fresh apples. However, they were spraying with chemicals that were extremely unhealthy. Many of the children that grew up in that town had a variety of health issues and as adults still do. We moved away after a few years still unaware of our surroundings. Early on I started buying organic flour thinking that was a good start. I made homemade bread without a bread machine and served it to my stepchildren after school. It was a healthy snack. Today even Walmart has organic fresh foods including fruits, green beans, peppers, summer squash, potatoes, apples, etc. Some Walmart’s even have frozen vegetables that are organic. I even buy organic decaf coffee from a company online. It is actually less expensive that the stores. Do you buy organic foods? In the Good Gus series, the town of Pecos back in the late 1800’s, I have read, had the best canteloupes. I have written about growing vegetables in Pecos. One of the stories, “Bandits Come to Pecos” is not about real bandits but you can guess what they are. They do work their way through everyone’s gardens. I have five Good Gus books published to date.
