Outdoors

How frequently do you see children playing outdoors?  I live in a gated community and only occasionally do I see children riding their bikes or playing basketball.  When the pool opens, it will be full, but where are they rest of the time?  When I was a child I would disappear for the day and return in time for dinner.  There are so many electronics that children are now caught up in games and are continually on the internet.  If they are not on their phones, tablets, laptops, they are watching TV shows. What happened to good old fashioned reading?  So many of the bookstores are closed. Libraries do have programs but not for the children in upper elementary school. There are, of course, organized sports activities, but there should be more real playing, riding bikes and any other activities that enhance the brain.  Adults do spend time outdoors usually attending their kids sports games.  Golf is a popular pastime for many individuals including children. Any type of activity that allows children and adults to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine is important.  Hiking is also a good way for the whole family to participate in the outdoors.  Of course, now that summer is approaching in at least half the world, BBQ’s are an everyday occurance.  Before long the beaches will be packed as well.  I hope everyone enjoys the fine weather. The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
