Fear of Water

There are people who have a fear of water. Often they don’t start that way, yet sometimes an event will occur that will change everything. I am currently helping a woman who  has always actively participated in all types of water activities. Here is her story.  She and a friend decided to use a kayak. It was an activity they had participated in for five years.  One day they decided to rent a boat and have a nice day on a lake. The rental shop manager declined the rental as she felt the boat was unsafe. The owner told her everything would be fine. He was one hundred percent wrong. The woman and her friend went out onto the lake. Before long there were issues with the boat.  Then it turned over and the life jackets did not work. They were stuck in the water over twenty minutes crying out for help. They couldn’t even hold onto the boat. They kept sinking in and trying not to drown. Finally, the manager and several others helped them. Once the ordeal was over they saw a doctor. Then their nightmare began.  They both began having nightmares and they were now terrified of the water. They saw doctors and the friend was so much worse that she ended up in a mental facility. The woman developed extremely anxiety. She tried to take a short cruise around San Diego, but could not even step on the boat.  Not only did she have a panic attack, she became dizzy because of now extreme fear of water. In addition, she was a caretaker for older individuals on cruise ships and that opportunity income is gone.  She can now go into shallow water but anything further will make her vomit. The result of almost dying has caused her many health issues.  She is also very depressed and had to begin blood pressure medications. She is very upset over her fear of water as she now can no longer play in the water with her grandchildren. The owner should have never allowed this tragedy to occur, don’t you agree?
