Escape

Many people find ways to escape their lives. They are unhappy and miserable so they do things to run away from their thoughts, their past, their lives, jobs, family and friends.  They cannot find a way to cope so they start drinking, doing drugs, become obsessed with various actions such as video games, extreme sports or exercises, overeating or other activities that can relieve their minds. What do you do and how do you help these individuals?  They could easily start with therapy but many people refuse.  There are medications to help people stop taking drugs and drinking.  Obsessive behavior takes a real effort to change.  The most important part is trying to figure out why a person needs to escape. If their family life is miserable then make changes.  Save money and move out.  If your relationship is miserable, end it.  If video games are your escape, try to take a walk, visit friends, or start a new activity that will relieve your mind.  Meditation helps but not everyone.  Overeating ends up causing a world of problems particularly health.  I knew a woman who not only overate but she also drank.  Finally, her parents forced her, even though she was in her thirties, to change her ways.  It took time but she eventually married and now she has a wonderful son who graduated from college this year.  It is easy to escape but it takes extreme effort to face your troubles and solve your situation.  Have you ever met anyone who could not face life and used various ways to escape?
