Taking a Walk

Whenever we go to the physicians’ they always ask if we exercise.  I always say that taking a walk twice a day is a priority for me.  Many people don’t realize the value of walking.  In Ireland, most people walk everywhere. Obviously, we drive but many individuals and families live within walking distance of the grocery and shops.  It is an easy exercise to keep your heart rate up.  People who own pets have to take their animals for a stroll.  I know a person whose father moved in with her after her mother died.  She gave him the duty of taking their dog for a walk a few times a day.  Not only did the dad get good exercise but he developed a social life with the neighbors and sometimes they walked together.  My friend also believes that by her dad walking it prolonged his life at least three years. Sadly, he has since passed. One of my daughter’s dogs believes in taking herself for a walk. The dog, Bonnie, has found various ways to open the fence and the gate.  She then strolls down the side of the road until she feels liking returning.  She is a sweet dog who has never bitten anyone.  Her goals in life are food and affection. More than once we have driven the neighborhood to find her.  The more my daughter blocks her exiting the more she tries to travel about.  She is a good dog but a wanderer. Of course, dogs do know when it is feeding time so she does manage to return home amazingly at the time. So, when the doctor tells you to start exercising, you can begin by taking a walk.  Who knows you might meet some interesting people, don’t you agree? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
